forte_3024-Edit

A military base that hosted the cycling road race, marathon swimming, and triathlon events at the 2016 Games. In 1908 the Brazilian army began construction on this coastal defense fort to protect both the beach of Copacabana and the entrance to the harbor of Rio de Janeiro.  On 5 July 1922, the fort was the centre point of the Copacabana Fort revolt where rebellious officers turned the fort’s guns on Rio de Janeiro. To suppress the revolt, the government attacked the fort from the sea with battleships, until it surrendered (39).
