Owned by the Rio de Janeiro state government, the stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. After its renovations from 2010-2013, the rebuilt Maracanã currently seats 78,838 spectators, the largest stadium in Brazil and the second in South America (45). It was the main venue of the 2016 Olympics hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and is currently used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro. In 2017 following the Games, The Sun reported on the stadiums condition, “broken seats are thrown in a heap and stray cats pick through discarded rubbish that has sat for weeks. The power has also been cut to the Stadium over unpaid bills.” (46)
